Perfume in a household product>

In this case, the client contacted us to compare two household products with the same effectiveness of action but a distinctly different smell:
- An odorless batch
- A batch smelling citrus / lemon
The distributor therefore wanted to know the composition of the competitor's product in order to understand the origin of this odor.
The laboratory carried out an analysis by Headspace / GCMS, an analytical technique allowing the identification of volatile organic compounds lower than 400g / mol directly in the products of interest.

Analysis of the odorless product revealed a composition of 98% water and 2% cocoamidopropyl betaine [61789-40-0], a surfactant widely used in cosmetics and cleaning products.
On the other hand, analysis of the product exhibiting a lemony odor revealed the additional presence of ethanol, the compatibilization solvent, and of limonene .
Limonene is a product widely used in particular for its fragrant properties, in fact it is a terpene that releases a tangy citrus smell .

Thanks to these analyzes, our client knows the compound that causes the odor of the competitor 's product and will therefore be able to rely on these results to modify the composition of his product.
