During the injection into liquid chromatography, all the semi-volatile organic molecules will be separated by the chromatographic column and then detected by UV and TOF detectors (ESI or APCI mode). The area of the chromatographic peaks of each compound is proportional to their content in the sample.
The TOF module makes it possible to detect the molecular ion (in ionized form = adduct) of a molecule with an extremely precise molar mass (4-digit precision). Knowledge of this molecular mass gives access to proposals for a raw formula.
Benefits
Exact mass measurement (4-digit precision) and identification of unknown compounds,
Identification and quantification of organic compounds,
Very sensitive (Limit of quantification <5 ppb for Irganox 1010 in a PE)
Disadvantages
Only molecules with heteroatoms are detectable (compounds of the family of simple aliphatics and aromatics are not detected).
Identification and determination of surfactants by UPLC/TOF-MS
Identification of unknown compounds by UPLC/TOF-MS
Identification and determination of antioxidants/anti-UV in polymers by UPLC/TOF-MS
